Alexander Kirk

Visiting PROFESSOR OF OLD TESTAMENT

Alex has spent his whole life in or around the ministry of the local church. He is the son of a pastor and never really considered doing anything other than teaching—but in what context, the church or the academy? In the gracious providence of God, he has kept one foot in both worlds.

Alex studied at the University of Florida (Bachelor of Arts, English and Classics), Regent College and Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando (Master of Divinity), University of Toronto (Master of Arts, Near Eastern Studies), and completed his Ph.D. in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Durham University in the UK. From 2016–2019 Alex spent most of his time teaching Bible and theology for national pastors in the majority world with Training Leaders International. He has taught at schools like Ecole Superieure Baptiste de Théologie de l’Afrique de l’Ouest in Lomé, Togo, Institut Biblique de la Croix-des-Bouquets in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, and Baptistička teološka škola in Novi Sad, Serbia. He has also taught for organizations like Cru and Campus Outreach and served on the pastoral staff of a local church. His Ph.D. thesis focuses on reading Proverbs 30 as both poetry and theology within the book of Proverbs and the Old Testament canon.

Alex is most passionate about leading people deeper into the literature of the Old Testament as the living and active word of the LORD to his people. His academic interests center on things like Biblical Hebrew philology, poetry, wisdom literature, hermeneutics and theological interpretation of Scripture, but if he could only do one thing in ministry and scholarship for the rest of his life it would be preaching.

Alex is married to Meghan, and together they have three small daughters, Ruth, Willa, and Janie. His idea of a perfect day involves a mix of reading novels, being immersed in nature, preferably surfing or hiking, and enjoying excellent food and drink with Meghan and close friends.
